Ian Curtis Publication.x

I've put together this document/publication, as a sort of collection of all the pieces I have produced over the last few months.
It features letterpress samples, typewriter, letraset text, screen-printed images and etchings.
I decided to produce a large scale publication, in two parts and two sizes.
The 1st is A2 double sided colour inkjet printed and halved to make A3 and
the 2nd part is A3 coloured card b&w inkjet printed and again halved to make A4.
I decided to give producing a publication another go on in-design and print it inkjet
rather than photocopying. I like the publication, especially how the two different
sizes and colour of paper slot in together. However there are a lot of things i would change...
for example I think all of the images and text would work better full bleed,
rather than centred on the page, but i guess this is something I will learn through
more experience of InDesign. Publication is hand-bound.

B&W Design Brief, re-edited.x

Unfortunately my tutor didn't like anybody's B&W entry, all 48 of them &
he gave 5 of us (myself being one) the opportunity to re-do our designs.
Apparently my first effort was too 'christmassy & i went into paperchase mode'
With more thought put into it, i needed to think outside of the box.
& I came up with a concertina fold card.

Double sided 16pp concertina fold, christmas card using wood block letterpress type,
hand-printed in metalic inks.
The card has the illusion that it never ends, an ampersand is followed by

 the name of a reindeer,
followed by an ampersand followed by a reindeer and so on,
wherever you 1st read the card it will bring you back to where you started,
a never ending reindeer loop!

Hmmmssss i still haven't heard anything back from my tutor OR B&W regarding the brief.x

B&W Design Brief.

B&W are a design company in Leeds &  after contact with one of our course tutors
they set us a brief to design their company christmas card.
The only requirements were that there are 2 words on the card joined by an ampersand to keep in the theme of the B&W design. The company will pick a winner who's designs will be made into the company card & they will win a short placement within B&W.x

My 1st idea was to use christmassy words. I used wood block type & hand printed them in gold, silver & red inks.

I then decided to narrow my idea down & began to work with the names of the reindeers, to produce a set of cards.
Experimented on coloured card...

However my final idea I have printed onto white card & added detail with a black fine liner, little hand-drawn antlers on top of certain letters.

Ian's poster.x

I want my design to become more graphically appealing, so i set myself the limitations of a type based poster.
I still kept my individuality hands-on approach by using typewritten text.
Just the date Ian Curtis was born & died.
& the words, 'Love really would tear him apart' at the bottom.
I wanted to keep it veryyy simple.
I screen printed the overall poster...
But is it too simple? hmm

Unknown Pleasures.x

Lino cut & etchings of the famous album cover from Peter Saville.
amazing design.
1st lino cut, but it's too think, so i then etched it to produce a much thinner line.x

canvas bags.x

just some canvas bags i made for friends, featuring the letterpressed phrase,
lyrics from Transmission.
Then taken into screen print & printed onto the bags.x

letterpress selection of ian curtis lyrics & quotes.x

some more letterpress samples, all to feature in my new ian curtis zine.
I set up my letterpress screens differently this time, allowing letters to slot in wherever possible, within reason.
& i think it works much better.

Initial letter press, Ian Curtis love poem.x

Now working on a quote ian wrote to his wife debbie, set in letterpress then edited in photoshop.x
